Interactive Art of Sound & Scent

Our laboratory has created digital art works ; "Art Animation with Scent" and "Cooking Game with Scent" in the collaboration with Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. The results of a study show us that the presentation of scent being mostly suitable for each scene can control degree of attention of that scene.
This new work is an interactive media art based upon concept of cross modality between auditory and olfactry senses and evokes imagination and creativity of a user from emotional view point. This new work has contents; cyber virtual ice cream shop and many people had experienced the work at "Koudaisai 2012" ; campus festival.

 

1. Cyber virtual ice cream shop with scents and sound

People visit the cyber virtual ice cream shop and they can select favorite flavor with electronic timbre that they feel most suitable. Playing MIDI clavier, a user feels harmony between scent and sound at the same moment using a head set.

People can access the ice cream shop through a touch panel of L.C.D..
We arrange 2 modes such as manual playing mode and automatic performance mode. The former for people with abilities of playing clavier and the latter for the rest.
The way to operate each mode is as follows.

<manual playing mode>
@ set the headphone with nozzle on your head
A touch favorite ice cream icon and select 1 timbre among 8 timbres on the L.C.D.
B You can freely play MIDI clavier and can listen to sound together with scents.

<automatic performance mode>
@ set the headphone with nozzle on your head
A touch demo music number on the L.C.D.
B You can listen to the demo music together with scents.
(The pair of ice cream-flavor and timbre of demo music has been fixed in advance.)

We focus on concept of "scent of scene" for music in the same manner as movie.
Most of movie works have story nature and the impression from objects influences people's feelings very much.
On the other hand, music works consist of some musical periods, which is unit of measure.
The temporal expression with scent synchronous with sequence of musical periods can enhance the effect of music in the way different from that of the movie.
The "automatic performance mode" automatically presents change of scent along demo music, and shows people the attractive features of the work.

2. Evaluation of "cyber virtual ice cream shop with scents and sound"

We demonstrated the work in our laboratory at 6&7 in october 2012. Many people visited us and answered their questionnaires with playback. They are summarized as follows.
Q1. Total of 107(98%)people answered "the scents matched the demo music".(Fig.3)
Q2. Total of 83(97%)people answered "the scents matched the selected timbre".(Fig.4)
Q3. Total of 33(85%)people answered "the scents enhanced the effect of demo music".(Fig.5)
This questionnaire survey suggests that simultaneous presentations of sound and scent give users accordance of emotion. Moreover, sound with scent evokes their imagination more strongly.
